In praise of older girls
In looks, performance, sheer style, she cannot be improved. After all these years and all these miles, she’s still the one. To risk an oxymoron, a fiberglass classic, designed in accordance with principles of lasting worth. Aesthetically pleasing, well-proportioned, functional, free of frills and teak bibelots. Her lines draw the eye as she rests gracefully at anchor.| On the hard, she stands apart;
like a glacier, more under water than above. The full keel and short, spread
out rig reveal her balance at a glance. Here stands a blue water boat. Experience
has disclosed the rest. That low, sleek elegance much more than looks. Set
low into the full keel, the living space is at the point of least movement.
A matter of great consequence when dirty weather kicks up.
While all sailboats rate the classification simply by possessing a mast or two, the nature of their sailing separates them. On those days of brilliant, perfect conditions, the proximity of the sea rushing past the hull thrills: a fast ride in an open sports car. She doesn’t tear up the course around the buoys, but her racing performance has surprised many, especially when the wind and seas are up. |
| Strong and mature at 27 years old, she handles the rough and the easy with the same sweet grace. You can't beat physics; when the wind’s a whisper, the lighter, fin-keeled boats with high aspect rigs blow by. But when those night squalls hit, we shorten less and ride better. Many an offshore trip proves the 24-hour run average, and that little green ketch gets in around the same day as its bigger companions, with a crew a little less traumatized. Age could be perceived as undesirable, but as Ben Franklin wrote a young friend seeking love: it gives many gifts. Particularly valid in vintage boat design whose twin benchmarks were form and function; the living proof the boats that are its products. While the sailing world will always welcome the newest, state of the art vessel, the aging classics like our beloved Seawind Moxie will be cherished by those for whom sailing is more than a sport and cruising is more than a pastime. |
